Right Whale Mother Nursing Calf Under Kelp in through a forest of kelp fronds near Cartagena

Right Whale Mother Nursing Calf Under Kelp

by Herbert Eaton

Sunlight pierces the turquoise Caribbean water, fracturing into shimmering caustic patterns that dance across the massive, dark forms of a right whale and her calf. Seen from behind, the mother's broad, barnacle-encrusted back dominates the foreground, her skin textured with callosities. The calf, smaller and smoother, nestles beneath her belly, its head angled upward as it nurses. Tall, slender kelp fronds sway gently in the current, creating a natural forest that filters the light and softens the distant background. A fine haze of plankton floats in the water column, blurring the edges of the kelp forest and giving the scene a luminous, submerged quality. The mother's tail fluke rests low, partially obscured by the swaying green fronds.
