Snappers Swirl Around Wreck Mast in Kelp in through a forest of kelp fronds in Florida

Snappers Swirl Around Wreck Mast in Kelp

by Rita Mercado

Dappled sunlight fractures through the dense canopy of brown kelp fronds, illuminating a school of red snappers circling a rusted shipwreck mast. The metal structure stands vertical and corroded, its surface textured with barnacles and patches of orange algae. Tiny white plankton particles float in the water column, creating a soft haze that blurs the background into muted greens and grays. The fish move in a synchronized, swirling rhythm, their scales reflecting the filtered light in flashes of crimson and silver. Cold winter water keeps the kelp stiff and upright, while the suspended debris drifts slowly past the wreck's jagged edges. A cluster of barnacles rests on the lower section of the rusted iron.
