Feather Star Crinoid on Zanzibar Volcanic Reef in beside a volcanic reef overhang near Zanzibar

Feather Star Crinoid on Zanzibar Volcanic Reef

by Dustin Kirk

Sunlight fractures into shimmering caustic ribbons across a dark volcanic reef ledge beside Zanzibar. A feather star crinoid anchors itself to the rough, black rock, its slender arms unfurled in a radial symmetry. The creature's pale, translucent appendages catch the midday glare, glowing with a soft, otherworldly blue hue against the deep indigo water. Suspended particles drift through the column, glittering like dust motes in the clear tropical current. Fine textures of the porous volcanic stone contrast with the delicate, feathery filaments of the crinoid. One arm tip rests against a jagged edge of the overhang, holding its position in the stillness.
