Cuttlefish Drifts Through Blue Hole at Dawn in beneath a reef ledge in tropical shallows near Zanzibar

Cuttlefish Drifts Through Blue Hole at Dawn

by Sophie Vance

Pale, mottled skin ripples with subtle texture as a cuttlefish hovers within the shadowed mouth of a reef ledge. Soft, low-angle sunlight pierces the surface haze, casting a narrow beam of warm gold that illuminates suspended particles glittering like dust in the blue water column. The creature floats weightless, its tentacles trailing slightly behind, framed by the dark silhouette of the overhead rock. Layers of depth recede into the distance where the water transitions from deep indigo to a hazy, luminous turquoise. Tiny specks of plankton catch the light, creating a field of scattered brightness against the darker recesses of the hole. A faint reflection of the sun’s edge shimmers on the water’s surface far above.
