Coral Dip Tray on Zanzibar Reef at Predawn in beside a volcanic reef overhang near Zanzibar

Coral Dip Tray on Zanzibar Reef at Predawn

by Carmen Hancock

Cold moonlight falls across a volcanic reef overhang near Zanzibar, illuminating a shallow coral dip tray resting on dark basalt rock. Inside the container, laminated cards, a patch of fur, acrylic pieces, metal fittings, and loose bedding fiber sit submerged in still water. Tiny suspended particles glitter throughout the water column, catching the faint blue light. The water surface remains motionless under the predawn sky, with the cool season visible in the clarity of the air and the stillness of the liquid. A shallow depth of field blurs the jagged volcanic stone in the background while keeping the floating debris and textured materials in the tray sharp. A metal fitting on the tray edge reflects a thin, sharp line of starlight.
