Blacktip Reef Shark on Zanzibar Coral Flats in beside a volcanic reef overhang near Zanzibar

Blacktip Reef Shark on Zanzibar Coral Flats

by Rhonda Wong

Honeyed evening light falls through exceptionally clear water, casting a firelight warmth across shallow coral flats beside a volcanic reef overhang near Zanzibar. A blacktip reef shark glides slowly through the transparent medium, its dark grey dorsal fin cutting a sleek line against the sandy bottom. The water surface above displays slow-moving ripples that fracture the golden sunlight into shifting patterns of amber and deep blue. Volcanic rock textures appear rough and porous along the overhang, against the smooth, pale coral heads scattered on the seabed. The shark's pectoral fins remain rigid as it patrols the turn-of-season currents, its black-tipped edges sharply defined. A final shadow stretches beneath the shark, marking the exact moment it passes over a cluster of branching coral.
