White Water Rushing From Storm Drain Under Viaduct Dawn in under a viaduct of steel and concrete in Kashmir

White Water Rushing From Storm Drain Under Viaduct Dawn

by Marcia Leon

Cold silver dawn light spills across a concrete channel where a storm drain culvert forces white, churning water beneath a massive steel and concrete viaduct. The water erupts in frothy turbulence against the dark, smooth interior of the pipe, creating a stark contrast with the grey masonry. Rough concrete textures line the channel, showing signs of weathering and mineral deposits from previous flows. Above, the heavy steel girders of the viaduct stretch horizontally, casting deep, geometric shadows that cut across the rushing stream. The late autumn air is visible in the crisp clarity of the light, stripping away haze to reveal the raw civic scale of the infrastructure. A thin layer of frost rests on the damp edges of the concrete rim where the water splashes. The entire scene sits under a perfectly clear, pale blue sky that offers no shelter from the open sky above.
