White Water Storm Drain Under Ulaanbaatar Viaduct in along a bridge maintenance walkway in Ulaanbaatar

White Water Storm Drain Under Ulaanbaatar Viaduct

by Tanya Brewer

Turbulent white water erupts from a concrete storm drain culvert, rushing beneath the heavy shadow of a viaduct in Ulaanbaatar. Dappled sunlight falls through sparse, leafless branches of early winter trees, casting shifting patches of brightness across the churning flow and damp pavement. A thick layer of ground fog pools in the low depression at the culvert's mouth, obscuring the base of the concrete pillars. The scene features a perfect symmetrical composition with the viaduct's arches framing the rushing water. Cold gray tones dominate the infrastructure, against the bright foam of the discharge. at the edge is the sharp, frothy edge of the water breaking against the dark, wet stone of the culvert floor.
