Concrete Viaduct Curving Over Strathcona Valley in beside a bridge pier above moving water near Strathcona, Vancouver

Concrete Viaduct Curving Over Strathcona Valley

by Patrick Wilkerson

Brutalist gray concrete dominates the view as a massive viaduct sweeps in a wide arc across the valley floor near Strathcona. The structure rests on a thick cylindrical pier rising directly from the churning water below. Bright noon light strikes the horizontal surfaces with a flat, unyielding glare, eliminating soft shadows and showing the raw texture of the weathered stone. A fine layer of spray and mist hovers just above the concrete base where the water crashes against the support. The river moves with visible force beneath the heavy engineering, creating a stark contrast between the fluid motion and the rigid, engineered geometry. Tiny ripples of white foam trace the water's path around the pier's base, while the distant valley walls fade into a hazy, washed-out blue under the intense overhead sun.
