White Water Spilling from Storm Drain Under Hangzhou Viaduct

by Spencer Banks

Frothy white water forces its way out of a circular concrete culvert, churning into the dark river below. A massive bridge pier rises from the current, supporting the steel girders of the viaduct overhead. Low golden light wraps the wet concrete surfaces in a warm glow, while deep shadows pool under the overpass. Bare winter branches frame the upper left corner, their leafless twigs silhouetted against the bright sky. Electrical cables and transformers hang from the structure, vibrating with the energy of the infrastructure. The water ripples with foam as it spills into the shadowed channel. A rusted steel bolt glints on the edge of the culvert opening.
