Steel Drawbridge Over Moat in Washington Haze in under a viaduct of steel and concrete in Washington

Steel Drawbridge Over Moat in Washington Haze

by Katherine Whitfield

Pale morning haze softens the edges of a steel and concrete viaduct stretching across a dark moat. The drawbridge structure rises in the center, its heavy cables angling upward to anchor points lost in the gray sky. Dramatic clouds stack low above the water, casting shifting shadows across the wet stone embankments. Converging lines of the bridge deck and support beams guide toward a distant vanishing point where the steel fades into the mist. The metal surfaces reflect the diffuse light, showing faint rust textures and rivet details along the girders. One cable hangs taut against the cloud cover, its dark line cutting through the pale atmosphere. The water below mirrors the gray steel, creating a seamless transition between the built structure and the natural basin.
