Twilight Storm Drain Under Turkmenistan Viaduct

by Robin Jenkins

White water erupts from a circular concrete culvert, churning violently beneath the heavy steel and concrete arches of a viaduct. The dry, dusty earth surrounding the outlet is cracked and pale, against the frothy foam of the discharge. Above, the steel girders form a dark geometric cage against a perfectly clear twilight sky that transitions from deep indigo to a soft violet. In the distance, the faint orange glow of a town lights the horizon, casting a warm reflection on the wet concrete surfaces. The high angle view emphasizes the scale of the infrastructure, showing the rough texture of the concrete and the metallic sheen of the support beams. A final shadow stretches from the culvert mouth onto the dry ground.
