Surreal Storm Drain Under Nigerian Viaduct in under a viaduct of steel and concrete in Nigeria

Surreal Storm Drain Under Nigerian Viaduct

by Gavin House

Cold silver dawn light floods the space beneath a steel and concrete viaduct, illuminating a storm drain culvert that disgorges a surge of white water. The impossible reality unfolds where thick moss and grass grow sideways up the vertical concrete pillars, defying gravity to carpet every upright surface in vibrant green. Heavy overcast skies diffuse the light, casting soft shadows that reveal the texture of the wet vegetation clinging to the infrastructure. The water rushes forward with civic-scale austerity, churning against the unnatural flora. At the edge of the frame, a single blade of grass bends sharply under the weight of the flowing stream.
