White Water Rushing Under Wisconsin Viaduct in beside a bridge pier above moving water in Wisconsin

White Water Rushing Under Wisconsin Viaduct

by Brendan Ponce

Flat noon light washes over the rough gray concrete of a massive storm drain culvert, forcing a torrent of white water from beneath a steel viaduct. The discharge crashes against the dark, moving river below, creating a chaotic foam that contrasts with the smooth, industrial surfaces above. Heavy steel cables hang vertically from the bridge deck, their shadows cutting sharp lines across the wet stone. Early spring air leaves the surrounding concrete bare, with no foliage to soften the engineered geometry. Converging lines of the bridge supports pull toward the vanishing point where the water disappears into the under-structure. One spray of droplets hangs suspended near the concrete edge, catching the harsh overhead glare.
