Whale Shark Twilight Oregon Dropoff
by Penny Gates
Cool blue twilight water fills the frame where a massive whale shark glides beside a steep volcanic rock wall. The shark's pale skin, patterned with faint white spots, contrasts against the deep indigo of the ocean. Several dark, oval remoras cling tightly to its flank and dorsal fin, their smooth bodies pressed against the slow-moving current. Light filters down from the surface, creating a soft gradient that fades into darkness at the bottom. The volcanic drop-off rises vertically on the left, its rough, gray basalt texture visible in the dimming light. Bubbles rise gently from the water's surface above, distorting the light into shimmering patterns. The water clarity allows the distant slope of the drop-off to fade gradually into the background. A final shadow stretches across the sandy seabed near the rock base.
