Whale Shark Through Volcanic Arch in Cobalt Water in above a rock shelf in clear water near La Paz

Whale Shark Through Volcanic Arch in Cobalt Water

by Aaron Delaney

Steel-blue ambient light fills the clear water above a submerged rock shelf near La Paz. A massive whale shark glides horizontally, its spotted grey skin illuminated by the early evening glow filtering from the surface. The animal passes directly through a dark, natural volcanic archway, its fins spread wide against the deep cobalt background. Fine plankton haze softens the distance behind the arch, creating layers of depth that fade into shadow. The shark's motion is frozen cleanly, showing the texture of its dermal denticles and the precise curve of its tail. Light reflects off the wet, smooth edges of the volcanic rock, against the soft, diffuse glow surrounding the fish. A faint shadow of the arch falls across the shark's lower flank.
