Fin Whale Surfacing at Sunset in British Columbia

by Scott Good

Golden firelight washes the gray ocean surface as a massive fin whale breaches beside a small research vessel. The whale's wet, dark skin reflects the low winter sun, creating a shimmering contrast against the deep blue water. Tiny suspended particles glitter in the water column, catching the fading light like scattered diamonds. Frost rests on the gunwales of the boat, indicating the dead of winter. Layers of depth recede into the distance where the horizon blurs into the hazy sky. The water ripples around the whale's back, sending small droplets into the air. One wave curls gently against the hull, its white foam bright against the dark water.
