Whale Shark Beside Volcanic Drop Off Mumbai

by Sonia Blackwell

Copper-toned light from the setting sun wraps around a massive whale shark gliding beside a steep volcanic rock formation near Marine Drive in Mumbai. The shark's spotted grey skin contrasts with the dark, jagged basalt walls rising vertically into the water. Several small remoras rest on the shark's underside and dorsal fin, their flat bodies pressed against the moving surface. Suspended particles glitter in the water column, catching the horizon light and creating a field of floating sparks. The wet season moisture hangs in the air above the water's surface, visible as a soft haze. The shark's tail fin cuts through the water, leaving a subtle wake that disturbs the glittering dust motes. One shadow falls across the rocky ledge, marking the edge of the drop-off.
