Blue Whale Breaching in Sydney Dusk in near Sydney

Blue Whale Breaching in Sydney Dusk

by Tom Tucker

A massive blue whale arches its back above the water surface, its dark grey skin glistening with droplets against the deepening twilight sky. The ocean below glows with a soft, diffuse blue hue characteristic of the last evening light. Fine suspended particles and plankton create a hazy veil in the water, softening the distant horizon and giving the submerged depths a milky texture. The whale's powerful tail flukes are partially visible, breaking the water line with a smooth, heavy curve. Light falls through the water column, illuminating the spray around the breach while the surrounding sea remains a gradient of indigo and charcoal. One strand of kelp drifts near the surface, caught in the wake of the animal's movement.
