Swallows Nesting in Florida Hangar Dawn Fog in among collapsed cloisters in Florida

Swallows Nesting in Florida Hangar Dawn Fog

by Chad Newman

Cold silver light falls through gaps in a collapsed cloister structure, illuminating dust motes in the dry air. An abandoned airfield hangar stands heavy with decay, its steel ribs exposed against a pale morning sky. Mud nests rest on the high rafters, built from wet clay and dried grass by swallows in flight. The ground is scattered with broken concrete and rusted metal fragments, softened by a thin layer of fog that hugs the floor. Sunlight barely touches the upper beams, casting long, cool shadows across the debris. One mud ball rests on a jagged edge of a fallen beam.
