Swallows Circle in Winter Hangar Ruin in through a courtyard reclaimed by grasses near Oviedo

Swallows Circle in Winter Hangar Ruin

by Damon Felix

Flat noon light floods the open mouth of a crumbling aircraft hangar, revealing rusted steel beams and peeling paint against a backdrop of heavy gray clouds. Tall winter grasses reclaim the courtyard floor, their dried stalks turning golden-brown under the dull sky. Inside the dark interior, swallows dart in tight, rhythmic circles around the high rafters, their dark silhouettes sharp against the dim wood. The structure stands as a skeletal frame, its corrugated metal roof partially collapsed to let the cold air in. One patch of green moss rests on the base of a rusted support pillar near the entrance.
