Ruined Stone Chambers Near Accra

by Jennifer Mason

Early afternoon light reflects off a shallow water source, casting a cool, silvery sheen across the interior of a roofless stone structure near Accra. The wide panoramic view reveals high walls where damp stains climb upward in dark, vertical streaks against the weathered grey masonry. Rows of rusted filing cabinets stand abandoned in the center, their metal surfaces dulled by the damp air and turning season. A thin layer of light fog hangs low, softening the edges of the stone blocks and blurring the distant opening to the outdoors. The floor is uneven, scattered with debris and shallow pools that mirror the pale sky. A thick patch of moss rests on the base of the nearest cabinet leg.
