Rotting Pews in Roofless Fujian Hammam Ruin

by Sierra Sawyer

Soft gray light from a clearing sky falls through the open ceiling of a roofless stone structure in Fujian, illuminating rows of water-logged wooden pews. The timber has rotted away, leaving jagged stumps and splintered slats that lie flat against the damp earth floor. Moss rests on the curved archways of the ancient hammam walls, their white plaster peeling in long strips to reveal rough brick beneath. Patches of golden ginkgo leaves and brown ferns carpet the ground between the decaying seats, against the wet gray stone. Rainwater pools in shallow depressions near the foundation, reflecting the pale sky above. A fractured beam rests diagonally across the rear wall, its wood gray and soft from years of exposure.
