Surreal Abandoned Airport Terminal South Carolina in among toppled columns and nettles in South Carolina

Surreal Abandoned Airport Terminal South Carolina

by Caroline Hendricks

Early spring sunlight pierces low-hanging clouds to illuminate the skeletal remains of an airport terminal in South Carolina. Toppled stone columns lie scattered across a field of green nettles, their weathered surfaces catching the first rays of dawn. Departure boards hang crookedly from the ruined facade, their dark screens reflecting the pale sky. Instead of rising, thick gray smoke descends from the broken roofline like heavy liquid, pooling on the ground and flowing around the nettles in slow, viscous ribbons. The light catches the texture of the decaying concrete and the wet sheen of the falling smoke. One cracked departure board hangs at the edge of the frame, its empty black surface mirroring the heavy, downward-flowing vapor.
