Pigeons Nesting in Crumbling Bell Tower

by Camilla Rivas

Steel-blue twilight washes over the weathered stone facade of a bell tower near Nis, its masonry crumbling into jagged edges. Early winter dampness coats the surface, turning the grey bricks slick with a fine drizzle. Above, the open belfry reveals a chaotic nest of twigs and dried feathers where pigeons huddle motionless. Reflected light from a nearby water source casts a cool, shimmering glow across the lower arches, highlighting the texture of eroded mortar. The birds remain perfectly still, their grey feathers blending with the stone, while droplets slide slowly down the ancient brickwork. One pigeon head turns slightly, its dark eye catching the faint reflection of the wet water below.
