Crumbling Lock Gates in Misty Queensland Dawn in beside a water tower ladder in Queensland

Crumbling Lock Gates in Misty Queensland Dawn

by Karla Walters

Rotten timber gates hang askew on a decaying canal lock, their weathered planks warped by years of damp. Misty diffused dawn light softens the edges of the rot, casting a pale, grayish glow across the wet stone and corroded metal hinges. To the right, the rusted steel ladder of a water tower climbs vertically, its rungs disappearing into the sea haze that blankets the horizon. The scene sits at the turn of seasons, where the air holds a heavy, humid stillness. Leading lines formed by the lock walls guide toward the distant, indistinct water. One rusted bolt on the lower gate catches the weak light, marking the boundary between structural integrity and collapse.
