Pigeons Rising from Decaying Lake District Train Shed in along a vine-choked corridor in the Lake District

Pigeons Rising from Decaying Lake District Train Shed

by Laurie Sutton

Golden light wraps the skeletal iron ribs of an abandoned train shed, illuminating dust motes suspended in the air. Thick green vines strangle the rusted beams, their leaves trembling in the wind. A flock of grey pigeons bursts upward from the high rafters, their wings blurring against the fading sky. The corridor stretches deep into shadow, layers of decaying brick and corroded metal receding toward a bright horizon. Rough textures of peeling paint and wet stone contrast with the soft glow of the setting sun. The birds scatter, leaving empty spaces where feathers once hung in the drafty structure.
