Swallows Nest in Abandoned Hangar Roofless Nave in inside a roofless nave in the Russian Far East

Swallows Nest in Abandoned Hangar Roofless Nave

by Allen Blake

Thick mist drifts through the open ceiling of a ruined hangar in the Russian Far East, softening the pale afternoon light. The roofless nave exposes weathered steel trusses to the gray sky, where mud nests rest on the rafters. Small swallows rest on their homes, their dark feathers contrasting against the rusted metal beams. The floor is a flat expanse of cracked concrete, slick with recent rain and scattered with dry leaves. Snow dusts the distant treeline visible through the mist, marking the polar night season despite the daylight. The structure stands silent, its walls stripped of paint, revealing layers of peeling gray and rust. One swallow shifts on its nest, its beak tucked into its wing against the damp air.
