Rain and Birds in Roofless Nursery at Dawn in inside a roofless hammam near Tamale

Rain and Birds in Roofless Nursery at Dawn

by Jasper Malone

Wet stone walls rise from a dirt floor within the open-air shell of a nursery near Tamale, stripped of its roof by years of neglect. Pale morning light cuts through the low horizon haze, illuminating dust motes dancing in the wind that whips across the dry, cracked earth. Birds nest in the crumbling brickwork, their feathers ruffled by the breeze. Rainwater pools in shallow depressions, reflecting the grey sky above. The scene shows resilient decay, with vines clinging to the remaining arches and scattered debris littering the ground. One bird takes flight from a broken window frame, wings blurred against the grey morning light.
