Elephant Herd Crosses Lake District Leaves in beside a tidal inlet in the Lake District

Elephant Herd Crosses Lake District Leaves

by Violet Morrow

Golden late-afternoon sunlight spills across a tidal inlet where an elephant herd moves through a carpet of fallen leaves. The air carries a brief sun shower, visible as fine droplets catching the light against the green grass. Distant birds scatter in a sudden flurry from the reeds near the water's edge. The massive gray skin of the lead elephant contrasts with the vibrant autumnal hues of the foliage, though the season is early summer with lingering leaf litter. Raindrops glisten on the rough texture of the trunks and the wet ground. The animals stand in patient stillness, their ears slightly raised, framed by the rule of thirds against the shimmering water. One reflection of a bird wing breaks the surface of the inlet.
