Beluga Whale Drifting in Auckland Shallows in above a seagrass meadow near Karangahape Road, Auckland

Beluga Whale Drifting in Auckland Shallows

by Mei Palmer

Turquoise shallows stretch beneath a beluga whale gliding over a seagrass meadow near Karangahape Road in Auckland. The water remains exceptionally clear, revealing the dark green blades of the seagrass swaying gently in the current. Above, the flat glare of late summer noon casts sharp, distinct shadows of the whale onto the submerged floor. The impossible surface below transforms into a mirror-still plane, reflecting the entire scene upside down with perfect symmetry. Slow-moving ripples disturb the water only at the very edge of the frame. The whale's smooth white skin contrasts against the vibrant blue-green depths, while its shadow rests directly beneath its body on the reflective seabed. One blade of seagrass bends under the weight of a passing current.
