Orca Spy-Hopping Beneath Arctic Ice at Night in beneath a pressure-ridged sheet of sea ice near Murmansk

Orca Spy-Hopping Beneath Arctic Ice at Night

by Jeremy Ingram

Deep shadow dominates the frame, broken only by a sharp rim of light tracing the curve of an orca's dorsal fin as it breaks the ice surface. The whale's head emerges through a narrow opening in the pressure-ridged sheet, its black skin absorbing the faint ambient glow while white patches near the eye catch the faint illumination. Water clarity is exceptional, revealing the texture of the ice above and the smooth, fluid motion of the animal. Slow-moving ripples distort the light at the surface, creating a fractured pattern of blue and grey across the water. The low angle emphasizes the scale of the whale against the dark, frozen expanse, with at the edge being the precise line where the water meets the whale's wet skin.
