Zebra Shark Resting on White Sand Near Coral Rubble

by Kyle Peterson

First light of dawn pierces the exceptionally clear water of tropical shallows near Stone Town, illuminating a zebra shark resting on a bed of white sand. The shark's spotted pattern of dark squares against a pale background stands out against the bright seabed. To the right, scattered coral rubble creates a jagged texture, against the smooth grains of sand. Above, slow-moving surface ripples distort the incoming sunrise rays, casting shifting patterns of gold and blue across the reef ledge. The cool season air is not felt, but the clarity of the water suggests a crisp, calm morning. The shark remains motionless, its fins tucked slightly, blending the organic curves of the marine life with the sharp edges of the surrounding stone. A beam of sunlight catches the edge of a broken coral fragment, highlighting its rough, porous surface.
