Carpet Shark on Coral Rubble at Night in beneath a reef ledge in tropical shallows near Denpasar

Carpet Shark on Coral Rubble at Night

by Dale Norman

Deep indigo water envelops a carpet shark resting on a scattered patch of broken coral rubble. The shark's mottled brown and cream skin displays intricate patterns that mimic the surrounding stones. Fine suspended particles glitter like dust in the faint starlight filtering from above. The scene is illuminated by a soft, cool blue glow rising from the reef floor. Tiny white specks float motionless in the water column around the shark's head. The coral fragments are sharp and jagged, against the smooth, curved body of the shark. One shadow falls beneath the creature, grounding it against the uneven seabed.
