Stingray Buried in Sand at Italian Dawn in along a kelp-fringed shelf in Italy

Stingray Buried in Sand at Italian Dawn

by Esmeralda Berry

Cold silver light falls through the water column, illuminating suspended particles that glitter like fine dust. A stingray lies half-buried in the sandy bottom, its smooth, dark skin blending with the seabed. Only its small eyes protrude above the sediment, watching the quiet current. Tall kelp fronds sway gently along the shelf, their brown and green hues muted by the early morning gloom. The water feels heavy yet still, holding the creature in a state of suspended rest. Tiny grains of sand shift slowly around the ray's edges. A faint reflection of a kelp blade rests on the sand near the stingray's tail.
