Bright midmorning sunlight pierces the surface of a cold British Columbia reef, illuminating a seal gliding beneath a dark volcanic arch. The water is thick with suspended particles that glitter like suspended dust in the harsh coastal glare. One impossible beam of intense, blinding white light strikes the seal's wet fur, leaving the surrounding arch and the deep reef in absolute, sharp shadow. The seal's body is crisp and clear against the dark stone, while the ripples above fracture the light into jagged shards. Tiny bubbles rest on the seal's whiskers, and the edge of the arch cuts a stark black line against the illuminated water column.
