Hokkaido Seal Swimming Through Kelp in Cobalt Sunset

by Jodie Russell

Cobalt light falls through the water column, illuminating a seal gliding horizontally through a dense kelp forest. The animal's sleek, dark fur glistens where the last rays of sunset penetrate the surface, creating a sharp contrast against the deep blue surroundings. Long, ribbon-like kelp fronds sway gently, their green surfaces catching the fading light. Tiny suspended particles glitter like stars throughout the water, suspended in the stillness. The reef edge drops away beneath the seal, marked by a jagged line of rock and shadow. One frond of kelp rests against the seal's flank, its tip curling slightly in the current.
