Harbor Seal Weaving Through Hokkaido Kelp in Copper Light

by Michele Hull

Copper-toned light falls through exceptionally clear water, illuminating a harbor seal as it glides between tall kelp fronds. The seal's sleek, dark grey fur ripples with slow motion, its head turning slightly as it navigates the dense stalks rising from a rocky shelf. Sunlight fractures into shimmering beams that dance across the kelp blades, casting shifting patterns of gold and amber on the submerged stones below. The water remains still except for faint, slow-moving ripples distorting the light at the surface. In the background, the rocky seabed fades into a soft blue-grey depth, while the kelp forest creates a textured curtain of green and brown. One ray of light catches the curve of the seal's whiskers, highlighting the fine texture of its skin against the swaying vegetation.
