Harbor Seal Drifting Through Kelp in Deep Shadow in through kelp fronds beside a rocky shelf in Florida

Harbor Seal Drifting Through Kelp in Deep Shadow

by Freda Olson

A harbor seal glides forward through the dense, vertical stalks of a kelp forest, viewed from behind. The water is exceptionally clear, revealing the rocky shelf to the right where the kelp roots anchor. Late autumn light barely penetrates the surface, leaving the depths in deep shadow while a faint rim light traces the curve of the seal's spine and the edges of the swaying fronds. Slow-moving ripples distort the view above, casting subtle, shifting patterns of light across the rocky bottom. The seal's sleek, dark fur blends with the shadowy water, its flippers moving with deliberate, weightless precision. A small cluster of brown kelp leaves rests against the rocky ledge, marking the boundary between the open water and the forest floor.
