Elephant Herd Crosses Snow Ridge Before Sunset in on a wind-scoured ridge near Stockholm

Elephant Herd Crosses Snow Ridge Before Sunset

by Bernadette Wright

Thick mist rests on the wind-scoured ridge near Stockholm as golden hour light fades into the gray of nightfall. A herd of elephants moves slowly across a crust of melting snow, their massive gray forms against the white ground. The side wind ripples the snow surface and stirs the air, while distant birds scatter in a sudden flurry of dark shapes against the pale sky. Framed by the dark, bare branches of a nearby tree, the animals appear as patient silhouettes against the dying light. The snow crust shows cracks and uneven textures where the thaw has begun. One footprint in the foreground reveals the rough, dark sole of an elephant pressing into the icy surface, anchoring the scene in its specific, impossible moment.
