Sandhill Crane Walking Mud Flats at Sunset

Golden firelight washes the muddy expanse where a sandhill crane strides against a stiff side wind. The bird's gray feathers ruffle visibly in the gusts, its long legs sinking slightly into the slick, wet earth. Behind the primary subject, a flock of distant birds scatters across the horizon, kicking up small puffs of mud. The ground reflects the low sun, creating a shimmering path of orange and brown across the dark, saturated soil. Leaves skitter rapidly across the foreground, pushed by the wind, adding texture to the scene. The water of the glacial stream glistens nearby, its surface broken by the movement of the wind. The crane's shadow stretches long and thin across the mud, anchoring the figure in the wide, panoramic landscape.
