Moonlit Glacial River Over Black Volcanic Sand

Silver water snakes through a bed of coarse black volcanic sand, reflecting the pale late afternoon light from a high ridge. Layered foothills rise in the distance near Plaza de Armas, Cusco, their surfaces dusted with winter frost. The river cuts a stark white channel against the dark, grainy ground, while wind whips the surface into sharp, frothy ripples. Dead of winter leaves the surrounding landscape bare and stark, showing the contrast between the cold, flowing water and the solid, dark earth. The water’s edge frays into fine mist where the current meets the sand. One patch of ice clings to a rock in the foreground.
