Basalt Column at Yunnan Tidal Waterfall Evening

by Michelle Yoder

Deep shadow swallows the lower rock face of a towering basalt column rising from the wave-cut shoreline. A sharp rim of pale evening light traces the jagged upper edge, separating the dark stone from the churning water below. Early summer mist rests on the air, whipping the surface of the waterfall into a frothy, horizontal blur that suggests strong wind. The rock's hexagonal faces are barely visible in the gloom, their rough texture softened by the damp atmosphere. Water cascades in a heavy, grey curtain that merges with the sea, creating a seamless boundary between the vertical column and the horizontal flow. at the edge is a thin line of white foam clinging to the base of the dark column where the tide crashes.
