Sea Pen Colony Swaying at Dawn in beside a volcanic drop-off in California

Sea Pen Colony Swaying at Dawn

by Lee Benson

Misty dawn light falls through exceptionally clear ocean water, illuminating a dense colony of sea pens rising from the dark volcanic drop-off. These feathery organisms sway in unison with the slow, deep current, their translucent pink and brown stalks catching the soft, diffused glow. The water remains still near the surface, showing only faint, slow-moving ripples that distort the light above. Layers of depth recede into the distance, where the dark slope of the underwater cliff fades into the blue haze. Individual polyps on the sea pens are visible as tiny, delicate structures, creating a textured forest against the smooth, dark rock face. The scene holds a suspended calm, with no sudden movements, only the gentle rhythm of the tide.
