Basalt Columns Oregon Coast Late Afternoon Haze in from a ridge above layered foothills in Oregon

Basalt Columns Oregon Coast Late Afternoon Haze

by Caroline Satterfield

Bright late afternoon sunlight illuminates the dark, hexagonal faces of a massive basalt column wall rising from the rugged Oregon shoreline. The vertical stone pillars stand in tight, geometric rows, their rough textures catching the open daylight while deep shadows carve out the crevices between them. Below, the ocean churns with white foam crashing against the base of the rock formation. From a low angle looking upward, the columns appear to stretch endlessly into the sky. In the distance, layered foothills fade into a soft sea haze that blurs the horizon line, showing vast atmospheric depth. The early autumn light highlights the stark contrast between the black volcanic stone and the pale, misty sky above. A thin strip of white foam rests on the wet rock at the very edge of the frame.
