Walrus Diving Toward Mussel Bed in Sicily in along a kelp-fringed shelf in Sicily

Walrus Diving Toward Mussel Bed in Sicily

by Nelson Ramirez

Deep blue water fills a wide panoramic view along a kelp-fringed shelf in late spring Sicily. A massive walrus glides downward, its tusked snout angled toward a dense bed of mussels on the sandy sea floor. Late evening light leaves the scene in deep shadow, tracing the animal's curved back and flippers with a thin rim of silver. Plankton haze softens the distance, turning the kelp fronds into blurred vertical strokes of dark green and brown. The mussel bed creates a rough, textured mosaic of grey and black shells against the pale sand. Light filters faintly through the water column, illuminating floating particles that drift like suspended dust around the diver's whiskers. The animal's shadow falls across the seabed, merging with the darker patches of the mussel cluster.
