Iceberg Calving at Dawn Over Vancouver in from a ridge above layered foothills near Main Street, Vancouver

Iceberg Calving at Dawn Over Vancouver

by Sydney Raymond

Cold silver dawn light bathes a massive iceberg as it splits from a glacier and plunges into the sea below. From a ridge overlooking layered foothills near Main Street in Vancouver, the white mass stands in sharp silhouette against a sky that defies logic. The left horizon glows with the pale gold of morning, while the right side plunges into a deep, star-filled night. Snow falls gently across the water and the distant urban skyline, softening the jagged edges of the ice. The transition between day and night runs straight down the center of the sky, dividing the scene without blending. One wave crest catches the silver light just as the iceberg's base disappears beneath the dark surface. The contrast between the familiar cityscape and the impossible celestial divide creates a still, expansive calm.
