Whale Shark in Dawn Thermocline Near Sapporo
by Albert Glass
Misty gray light falls through the cold winter water, illuminating a massive whale shark suspended in a sharp thermocline. The creature's pale underbelly contrasts with the dark upper depths, its spotted skin texture visible through the suspended glitter of plankton and ice particles. Fine mist hangs above the water surface, diffusing the first light of dawn into a soft, luminous glow that penetrates the water column. The background dissolves into a blurred wash of deep blue and silver, showing the isolation of the shark in this submerged, frozen environment. Tiny bubbles rest on the shark's dorsal ridge, caught in the stillness of the deep winter current. One ray of light strikes a cluster of suspended particles, turning them into scattered diamonds against the shadowed flank of the animal.
