Surgeonfish Grazing Reef Rock at Sunset in beside a volcanic reef overhang near Cebu

Surgeonfish Grazing Reef Rock at Sunset

by Nathaniel Reynolds

Amber firelight falls through the monsoon water, illuminating a school of surgeonfish as they graze algae on jagged volcanic rock. The fish move in synchronized patterns against the dark, overhanging cliff face of the Cebu reef. Tiny suspended particles glitter in the warm current, creating a field of suspended light that surrounds the silver-blue bodies. The water column holds a heavy, dreamlike stillness despite the active feeding. Behind the fish, the rough texture of the basalt overhang rises vertically, its surface covered in thin green mats of algae. The light reflects off the wet scales, highlighting the sharp spines along their backs. A cluster of small orange sponges rests on the shadowed crevice at the bottom right corner.
