Anthias Swarm Volcanic Reef Dawn Cebu

by Kennedy Stein

First light of dawn pierces the monsoon water, illuminating a dense school of orange anthias swarming around a rugged volcanic coral bommie. Tiny suspended particles glitter in the beam of the rising sun, creating a field of suspended sparks around the fish. The coral surface displays rough, porous textures in deep browns and grays, against the vibrant, uniform orange of the swarming fish. Water clarity reveals individual scales and fins as the school moves in unison against the dark shadow of the reef overhang. Sunlight falls through the water column, highlighting the rhythmic motion of the fish against the static, jagged stone. One bright orange scale catches the light at the edge of the swarm, marking the boundary between the moving mass and the still water.
